In Egypt and many other countries in the Middle East, men won't tell other people their mother’s name. Instead many women are generally identified as "The mother of [her eldest son]". UN Women video: http://goo.gl/MdBjBH

I think this is a side effect of the general disrespect and misogyny towards women in these regions (along with class issues), exemplified by what one of the men interviewed in the video said:
"If I reveal my mother's name, then someone might call me by it just to embarrass me and bring me shame."

These areas have a long way to go when it comes to regarding women as equal, but luckily there are activists and organisations working hard for this.

In the last week I met two people I haven't seen in around five years.

One was an ex-lover, and she said that I didn't look a day older and that I am slimmer now.

The other was an old acquaintance, and he said that I had gotten more grey hairs in my beard and that I had put on weight.

Tomorrow Bali will celebrate Nyepi, their New Year. It's a silent day for self-introspection and reflection before the new year. No one is allowed to walk on the streets or beaches, to make sure the evil spirits don't see anyone and leave Bali alone for the next year.

When you start moving around the world, you get to make friends in many different places. Many of them are kindred spirits who are also moving around.

This means that you have friends all over the world, but it also makes it harder to make long-term connections.

This teaches you that friendship (like everything else) is a transient thing, and you learn more and more to enjoy the moment, create memories and give up long-term attachment.
